temporary self portrait in preparation for the singularity
A virtual self portratrait commissioned by the National Portrait Galley, Canberra.
A virtual mnemonic device containing narratives of the artist’s life, both remembered and imagined. Each of the cubic nodes within the device can forge new connections with its neighbours creating a navigable network of narratives to which the viewer is given access through text and image.
The work questions the site of the self and its relationship to the narratives of memory. By creating a non-linear database of remembered images and words that can be traversed within real time and connected to other ‘memories’ – not by the artist himself, but by an artificial and virtual system – the viewer is asked to wonder if the site of the self can be shifted to a place completely removed from its traditional abode somewhere within (or as a part of) the body.
