Khepri after Khepri

Spoken word performance and VR experience

Khepri after Khepri is an overGround:underStory as a confluence of queer iconography and ecological meddling - a more-than-human encounter told across five centuries. It traces a lineage of scarab beetles from ancient egypt to the outback of (now)australia in the 1970's and beyond.

It starts in the tomb of the royal manicurists Khnumhotep and Niankhkhnum, where Khepri the scarab watches over the two men's carved depiction in an embraced reserved for married couples. We later find Khepri (as another species of scarab) introduced in the outback as biological control for flys breeding in the copious amounts of cattle dung.

All the while khepri is watched over by Pete Burns of Dead of Alive, whos iconic single You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) (1985), is speculated to be a tribute to this hard working little critter.
